There are about 10 million people in the Czech Republic (1.3 million in Prague). Most of them are Czechs and they speak Czech language. They tend to be polite, mild-mannered with a good sense of humor, not incline to argue or fight. They are intelligent, creative, well educated and can be quite conservative. If you are invited into home, you will find them friendly and very hospitable
The Czech Republic, as a part of Middle Europe, is squeezed between Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. The country is bordered by the mountains. Its area is almost 79.000 sq. km (30.000 sq. miles), as same size as the island of Ireland

The air gate to the Czech Republic is Prague International Airport (PRG) which has daily connection from/to major European cities. From/to other destinations you will have to transfer in Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam or Paris. The airport called Ruzyne is located on the northwest edge of the city. In the Arrival Terminal find post office, bank and exchange counters, car rental agencies counters, AVE accommodation agency counter and restaurant. In the Departure Terminal are located shops, restaurants, fast food and airline agencies counters

Probably the first place in the Czech Republic you will arrive to will be Prague. The City Transport Authority (Dopravni Podnik or just DP in Czech language) network covers the whole city of Prague and includes trams, city buses and metro (subway). But remember, the compact historical center is best appreciated on foot.
The same ticket is used on all parts of the public transport system. They are sold from the yellow machines in metro stations or from newsstands or from the City Transport Authority Information Offices (see below). Validate your ticket by punching it in a little yellow machine in the metro station lobby or on the bus or tram. Prague used to be known with bad taxi drivers. Some of them were real bandits and were even involved with crime. But it has been improving in last few years and now you don't have to worry about calling taxi through the operator anymore

Czech cuisine is typically central European, with German, Austrian, Polish and Hungarian influences. The standard meal, offered in just about every restaurant is 'knedlo, vepro, zelo'. It is bread dumpling, sauerkraut and roast pork. You should taste it while you are there. The last years have seen a boom in restaurants serving more exotic cuisine so the selection is large but constantly changing

Czech beer has been brewed there since the 10th century. Recently the best known are Plzen (Pilsner Urquell) and Budvar (Budwaiser), but there is dozen other really good beers (Kozel, Krusovice, Radegast, Smichov ...). The American Bud has its origins in the original Budvar which has been brewed for the last 300 years in Ceske Budejovice, Southern Bohemia. Beer experts say that the original Czech Budvar is better than the American copy.
